Playing and Growing with Art
Entering its third year, the fine art workshop series presented by the Arts Alliance of Three Rivers has been christened “Seedlings”, denoting the powerful new growth in creative expression that is awaiting artists and non-artists alike. Two spring workshops and one autumn one are slated for 2013, taught by strong, established artists from all over California, including our own neighborhood.
The Arts Alliance emphasizes that you don’t have to call yourself an artist to enjoy a Seedlings workshop. And, as an established artist, you can stretch and deepen your favorite art medium by playing with other forms of expression, techniques and materials.
Set in a lovely Sierra foothill canyon, Saint Anthony Retreat has been chosen as the home for the workshop series offered by the Arts Alliance. With beautiful, scenic vistas, along with an ample lunch each day, this revered Three Rivers location is the perfect place to retreat from busy lives, pressures of daily work and chores, and the individual limitations and frustrations we often find when pursuing the artist’s life.

Taking Flight: Calligraphy as Abstract Painting
Learn to use three styles of calligraphy as doorways to creating abstract paintings that go beyond words and letters to express your creativity. Although this is not a class in which you will learn an alphabet, you will explore the general structures of brush lettering, Roman capitals and Italic lettering to discover the essence of each style.
Through a series of exercises we will experience the letters’ shapes and spaces, colors and shades of light, to find a personal connection with them. Working with gestures, our senses, and listening for inspiration from our muses, you will discover the images, thoughts and feelings that spontaneously arise within us in relation to each lettering style. You will allow these images to guide the marks we make on the page and follow the expression of these marks to complete works of art and a small book that each participant will make.
Lessons on the elements and principles of design, and using color will be woven into the fabric of this workshop. No calligraphy experience is needed to learn this process of using these letter styles as a portal into your world of artistic expression.
For a materials fee*, the instructor will provide:
4 sheets of Arches Text Wove paper
Canson and newsprint paper

Required supply list to bring with you:
