Profile Information

I'm a member of that notorious gang known as "Poets Behaving Badly." When on my good behavior, I teach English, direct the William Saroyan Centennial Writing Competition (international contest in Fiction, Nonfiction and Drama), am listed in the Academy of American Poets, have published poetry, fiction and nonfiction professionally, earned an MFA in Creative Writing, run National Poetry Month activities, read my work when asked, talk about writing with whomever is interested. I'm married to Ron Bohigian, who is even more creative than I am. My newest project is a collaboration with Steven Barile (Fresno Poetry Center) and the San Joaquin River Parkway Trust to produce a gorgeous book of poetry about the San Joaquin. I have a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts and am interested in collaborations.
Arts Specialty:
I'm a poet, writer, teacher of writing, pen-and-ink artist, collagist, erstwhile painter.

Publishing 4 more poems!

I just learned that a journal called HotMetalPress is publishing all 4 of the poems I submitted to them for their winter/spring issue, which should be out fairly soon. As I looked at the e-mail requesting the publication rights, I saw what I think is a clue about why they took all four poems, instead of the usual cherry-picking that goes on. It's not unusual to submit 4 and have them take 1, or none at all.

The interesting thing about this particular submission was that the… Continue

A New Publication and a Pushcart Prize Nomination

My poem, "Sweeping, el logico de la escoba, a los desaparacedos de Guatemala" has just come out in the new double issue of Whiskey Island Magazine, which has nominated it for a Pushcart Prize. Whiskey Island Magazine is published in Ohio. I wrote to the editor after being notified of the nomination, that validations through publishing come few and far between, and to be not only published but nominated for a Pushcart is amazing. Let this be encouraging to us all!

Invitation to Entertainment of Various Sources

Two events of note upcoming:

On Saturday August 16, 2008, my broadcast of the readings from the international literary competition I directed this year, the William Saroyan Centennial Prizes (fiction, nonfiction, and one-act play) will be broadcast on KFCF. The readers are me, reading Bethany E. Chaney's winning essay, Learning the Alphabet, Skip Sargenti reading Hal Ackerman's one-man, one-act play, Testosterone, and Paula Fansler reading Elizabeth Edelglass's winning short story,… Continue

I recently learned that Whiskey Island Magazine, published in Cleveland, Ohio, has nominated my poem "Sweeping, el logico de la escoba" for a Pushcart Prize. Whiskey Island Magazine published the poem in their most recent issue.

This is post-phone call, and I'm just confirming I'm doing the 21st. Thanks!

Hi Megan:

Raquel again. I'm just a little confused as to what date you will be doing Shakespeare. I had Aug. 16, but then noted Aug. 21 on your blog info and thought the 16th was my error, and then saw your event that states the 16th. Please let me know ASAP what day you will be doing the pre-show as I have already contacted back-ups for Saturday and am waiting to hear from them too. One note about this Saturday however, I just found out that there will be a concert at the park that day, so we will be competing with some noise. If you feel that is a problem, I am holding Aug. 21 for you. Call me or email me. 213-503-9046 or

Hi Megan:

Ignore my call, I was looking at the wrong date. I have you scheduled for Aug. 21, not the 16th. Please let me know if that needs to change.

Go to, click on images, use broadcast or mic or radio as keyword, then download the image you like to use (make sure it's not copyrighted)... Most images are mostly ok to use...

Hello Megan,

We would love to see your blog of events posted under the "Spoken Word" category of our events section. Let me know if you need assistance in posting events. As you might have noticed, the "Spoken Word" category has barely any events (thanks to Inner Ear PJ). It would be great for you to represent... :)

Hi, Raquel, It's late Tuesday afternoon, and just got back into Internet access...I've been in the mountains for a week. Can we talk about what would be involved? My cell phone is 960-5380---I still have the same questions///what is the venue like, is there a microphone that's stationary or can I move, how long should it be, how do you envision this, what kind of "preshow" does your audience expect, given what's already happened so far this season....stuff like that. It is possible I could do Friday, but I'll be scuffling. I have a poetry studio at my house Wednesday, but I'd have Thursday to work on it. My home number is 233-0740. Give me a call as soon as you get this.

Hi Megan. I hadn't heard from you, and just saw your comment reply on your page ( I do that all the time). I'm guessing you won't be available this Friday then, or is there anyway you would be able to do a short reading. I had penciled you in for both days. If you are available let me know as soon as possible as I need to find a replacement if you are not.
