The winter 2010 offering comprises The Creation by Joseph Haydn. Fresno Community Chorus performs for the second time at the stunning Paul Shaghoian Concert Hall on the Clovis North Educational Center campus.
Written between 1796 and 1798, The Creation is considered by many to be Haydn’s masterpiece. The oratorio celebrates the creation of the world as described in the three sources Haydn referenced: the Biblical books of Genesis and Psalms, and John Milton’s epic Paradise Lost. An overture representing Chaos opens the work with an initial indefinite effect. Order begins to make itself apparent as the instruments struggle out of the confusion, until the orchestra and chorus at once burst into the magnificent “And there was Light.” From creation of the firmament and the raging of storms, through the celebration of the making of sea creatures, birds, animals, and humanity, this oratorio moves the audience masterfully through soft passage and monumental chorus. The Creation is set for vocal soloists, four-part chorus, and large orchestra.
