SAM Academy is a comprehensive STEM + Arts program that specifically targets underserved children and their communities. Picture a program that is fun and engaging for children and adults, promotes school success, youth development, 21st century skill development, and community building. The first and only program of its’ kind in the Central Valley of California, SAM Academy provides innovative programming such as the Tinkering Studio, Keyboard Encounters, Young Makers Workshop, Family STEAM Nights (STEM + Arts), and Summer Arts and Science Academy. SAM Academy staff creates a collaborative culture of creativity, innovation and experimentation, while kids are having fun and learning how to integrate the visual arts with scientific and engineering practices. In the Young Maker Workshops children are guided to design and build projects based on their own interests and ideas using inexpensive materials and tools. While engaged in the Tinkering Studio, both children and adults develop age appropriate skills to work with a wide range of materials and tools. Keyboard Encounters provides a nexus between tradition and technology, engaging children to learn how to play the piano and providing a foundation for developing musical creativity and composition skills. Digital media and music experiences also enhance spacial-temporal reasoning abilities of children, resulting in improved math and science abilities. Key 21st Century skills such as teamwork, communication, collaboration, and ideation are stressed in this innovative approach to learning.
