Profile Information

Jeanette Gutierrez

Born in Redwood City California in 1981 and raised in the town of Dinuba California. Materials and processes used in her work were nurtured through family relationships. Her mother a seamstress, who used crude sketches to describe aspects of her Mexican heritage and culture. Her father a collector of artifacts, an upholsterer and an excellent craftsman inspired the use of fabrics and found materials in her work. Gutierrez received her BFA at California State University Fullerton and is currently perusing an MFA at Asuza Pacific University.

Graduating with an emphasis in painting she began to pull away from her previous formal notions of art that limited her work to tightly rendered portraits. In 2008 she began to explore her work conceptually using new materials and methods. Her explorations led her to the use of found materials and sewing to produce objects through deconstructive and constructive processes in order to explore cultural expectations and traditions within the social structure of the institution of marriage, especially as it applies to the personal experience and roles of women.

Her works are included in the collections of California State University Fullerton and have been displayed at Artes Americas Museum in Fresno CA.
Arts Specialty:
Her current works in the Bridal Musings Series (2009) are characterized by the use of gifted artifacts, wedding dresses that are acquired by means of public advertisements. Gutierrez constructs sculpture and installation works by repurposing gifted materials creating emotional experiences through suspended dynamic compositions that result in works of controlled chaos. The works reveal a unique presence of the individual as well as reflecting the artist’s personal views on social, cultural and relational issues.
