I usually use 2b charcole pencil and vine. and some 2b compressed for those darker areas. i like the detail the pencil offers.

I did this for my intro to art class back in 2007 at State. Our teacher had us hang up a small mirror in the art studio and draw ourselves by looking into the mirror. She gave us free choice on what materials we wanted to use or how we went about this. It took probably 2 to 3 days (Class hrs). For the highlighting and shadowing she closed all of the windows and drew the curtains and had us each light a candle to use as our source of light to finish the portrait. I'm happy on how it came out. My teacher said it, "looks as if I'm submerged in water. Overflowing with currents and ripples."

Yeah I've used charcoal and graphite pencils but I don't know what it is but I prefer chalk. I don't feel so constrained with it like I do with pencil. I'm trying to incorporate color in my illustrations but I love black and white. The absence of color gives me more freedom.
