Event Description

California Opera performs and highlights Zarzuela as the main theme of the Fresno Art Museum Summer Opera Series, together with Miwako Isano (Soprano) in an Evening where Asian and Latin music collide. Zarzuela grew out of Spain’s long tradition of lyric theater. It is rooted in the plays of the 1600s and is akin to American musical theater, the operettas of Britain’s Gilbert and Sullivan, French opéra comique and Italian verismo opera and opera buffa. Plácido Domingo, a huge proponent of zarzuela when few people outside of the tradition had heard of zarzuela, hoped to generate curiosity about this exotic music when with LA Opera. Dr. Ballerino was on staff at Los Angeles Opera as a coach and pianist for the Zarzuela that featured Plácido Domingo. Dr. Ballerino returns on staff with California Opera as a coach and collaborative artist, and this summer brings Zarzuela to Fresno Art Museum on July 21, 28, and August 2. Each performance will bring a new outlook on the art of Zarzuela, complimented by a unique opera artists showcase that is different for each performance day and event. The California Opera Summer Opera Arts Series at the Bonner Auditorium of the Fresno Art Museum is open to the public with a free will donation welcome at each of these three different performances, made possible by the Bonner Family Foundation.
